Martian Dust Storms and Gravity Waves: Disentangling Water Transport to the Upper Atmosphere
نویسندگان
چکیده
Simulations with the Max Planck Institute Martian general circulation model for years 28 and 34 reveal details of water "pump" mechanism role gravity wave (GW) forcing. Water is advected to upper atmosphere mainly by upward branches meridional circulation: in low latitudes during equinoxes over south pole solstices. Molecular diffusion plays little transport middle across mesopause. GWs modulate temperature global dust storms, thus changing timing intensity transport. At equinoxes, they facilitate accumulation polar warming regions followed stronger upwelling equator. As equinoctial storms decay, tend accelerate reduction thermosphere. delay onset solstitial change globally averaged amount 10-25%.

Detecting electrical activity from Martian dust storms
We present a model addressing the possible electrification of Martian dust storms based on the effective electrical charging of an individual dust grain. An upper charge bound on a grain can be determined based on the grain capacitance in the lowpressure Martian atmosphere. It is assumed that treiboelectric and inductive processes, like that presumed operating in terrestrial dust storms, can el...
متن کاملMass of Dust in the Martian Atmosphere
1 Estimates of the mass of dust suspended in the Martian atmosphere are derived from global and regional 9 pm opacity maps produced from Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper data. During the peak of the 1977b storm, a total dust mass of approximately 101 S gm was suspended, equivalent to 10-3 gm/cm2, or a layer 4 Lm thick. During a local dust storm near Solis Planum at Ls 227°, approximately 3.56 x 1...
متن کاملThe Harsh Electro-chemical Environment in Martian Dust Storms
Introduction: Mars is a planet of many apparent dichotomies in topography, atmospheric evolution , hydrology, and geomagnetism. We describe yet another set of extremes in the area of atmospheric chemistry. While solar photons in fair-weather are a known and well-studied driver of Martian chemistry, there is increasing evidence that electro-chemistry unique to dust storms may be a second new dri...
متن کاملA stringent upper limit to SO2 in the Martian atmosphere
Surfur-bearing molecules have been found at the surface of Mars by the Viking lander, the Spirit and Opportunity rovers, and the OMEGA infrared spectrometer aboard Mars Express. However, no gaseous sulfur-bearing species have ever been detected in the Martian atmosphere. We search for SO2 signatures in the thermal spectrum of Mars at 7.4 μm using the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph (TE...
متن کاملMartian dust storms as a possible sink of atmospheric methane
[1] Recent laboratory tests, analog studies and numerical simulations all suggest that Martian dust devils and larger dusty convective storms generate and maintain large-scale electric fields. Such expected E-fields will have the capability to create significant electron drift motion in the collisional gas and to form an extended high energy (u kT) electron tail in the distribution. We demonstr...
